Marble, becomes a part of our life about 2000 years ago. Marble has played an important role in the the development of cultures. In the same way, Products obtained from marble have been processed and used by people throughout history. The main areas of use of marble, which was used in art due to its aesthetics and durability. Therefore the construction sector and decoration are the other areas use of marble.
With its geological definition, marble is defined as the carbonate composition rocks such as limestone dolomite, which undergoes a metamorphism process and carries traces of metamorphism. However, marble also define as; all kinds of stones that can give blocks, able to cut and polished or whose surface can be processed and whose stone properties comply with the norms of the facing stone are known as marble in the commercial jargon. According to this definition, sedimentary such as limestone, travertine, sandstone; metamorphic such as gneiss, marble, quartzite; Igneous stones such as granite, syenite, serpentine, andesite, basalt are also called marble.It is of great importance to choose marbles with properties suitable for their areas.
Hard marbles are mostly used in floors and door sills in buildings. In general, the hardness of the marble increases with the increase of silicate minerals. Cutting and shaping of hard marbles is more difficult and costly. On the other hand, they accept very good polish.
Water absorption is more important for the marbles used in the exterior cladding of the buildings. Because rain water affects especially the carbonate-containing marbles and causes them to dissolve.
Real marbles are in white tones when they are pure. However, colored marbles are more common on earth. Coloration is caused by the presence of secondary or minor foreign elements and minerals in addition to the main mineral that forms the marble. Color and pattern are among the features that play an important role in trading.
It is the ability of marble to transmit light. The transparency properties of fine crystal marbles are higher.The polish holding properties of marbles vary. In general, hard marbles accept better polish. The cost of marbles that are slabs and sized in marble factories is closely related to the polishability of this material. The market value of materials that cannot be polished well is low.
